Don't Forget the Edges

When finishing a wooden door, make sure the top, bottom and side edges are properly sealed, not only the visible front and back surfaces. Moisture entering through an unfinished edge can contribute to swelling, movement and distortion of the timber.

This is particularly important on exterior doors and doors exposed to damp or humid conditions.

Watch for Swelling During Wet Weather

In areas such as KwaZulu-Natal and other humid or high-rainfall parts of South Africa, wooden doors can absorb moisture during extended periods of wet weather.

You may notice that a door which normally opens smoothly suddenly begins rubbing against the frame or becomes difficult to close.

A slightly swollen door does not necessarily need to be immediately trimmed down. Timber naturally expands and contracts as environmental conditions change. Removing too much material while the door is swollen could leave an excessive gap once it dries again.

Instead, first check that the door is adequately sealed and that water is not reaching exposed timber.

Check the Finish Regularly

You don't have to wait until a wooden door looks damaged before maintaining it.

Every few months, take a quick look at exterior doors for signs such as:

• Peeling or flaking varnish
• Faded or discoloured timber
• Dry or rough areas
• Small cracks in the finish
• Exposed timber along the edges
• Moisture marks
• Loose hinges or hardware
• Changes in how the door opens or closes

Catching these signs early usually means the maintenance required is relatively simple.

If the existing coating has deteriorated significantly, the door may need to be lightly sanded and refinished before moisture has an opportunity to penetrate the timber.

Clean Wooden Doors Gently

Regular cleaning helps maintain the appearance of both interior and exterior wooden doors.

For everyday cleaning, use a soft cloth with mild soapy water, followed by a clean damp cloth if necessary. Avoid soaking the timber.

Harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners and excessive water can damage certain finishes and should generally be avoided.

After cleaning, wipe away excess moisture rather than allowing water to remain on the surface or collect around the bottom edge of the door.

Look After Interior Wooden Doors Too

Interior wooden doors are protected from direct weather, but they still respond to humidity and temperature.

Bathrooms, kitchens and poorly ventilated rooms can expose doors to higher levels of moisture. Make sure these areas have adequate ventilation and avoid allowing water to repeatedly splash onto wooden doors.

Interior doors generally require considerably less maintenance than exterior doors, but their finish should still be cleaned and inspected periodically.

Keep Hinges and Hardware in Good Condition

Sometimes a door that appears to be warping or sticking simply has loose hinges.

Check the hinges and screws periodically and tighten them when necessary. Handles, locks and other moving hardware should also operate smoothly.

Properly supported hinges help keep the door correctly aligned within the frame and prevent unnecessary pressure on the timber.
